BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Authorities have charged two men in connection with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in a Birmingham public housing community. Edjuan Figguers, 21, and Deleon Hawkins, 22, face capital murder charges following the death of Lorenzo Davis Jr., a student at Huffman High School.
The shooting occurred Thursday night around 11:30 p.m. in the Collegeville area, where multiple gunshots rang out. Responding officers discovered Davis unresponsive inside an apartment. He was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service shortly after their arrival.
Investigators quickly identified a connection between the suspects and the victim, suggesting an earlier dispute may have led to the tragic incident. As evidence was gathered from the scene, police noted numerous shell casings littering the area.
In the aftermath of the shooting, family and friends of Davis gathered outside the apartment complex, visibly shaken by the loss. Heartbreaking scenes unfolded as the victim’s parents were overcome with grief, expressing their devastation at the tragic turn of events.
In a coordinated effort, law enforcement officials from the Birmingham Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau and Tactical Unit worked together to swiftly apprehend the suspects. Chief Michael Pickett was present with the arrest teams as they took Figguers into custody in the 900 block of Ninth Street Southwest and Hawkins in the 300 block of Second Street West.
Both suspects are currently being held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail. Chief Pickett emphasized the importance of a rapid response in violent crime cases, stating, “This is another example of what happens when strategy, urgency, and accountability meet in real time. We are committed to moving quickly and demonstrating that violence will not go unanswered in our city.”
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with further information to reach out to the police department or submit tips anonymously. The shooting has added to ongoing concerns about violence in the area, emphasizing the need for community engagement and preventive measures to protect residents.
