Jefferson Parish Man Convicted of Triple Murder in 2019 Crime Spree, Faces Life Behind Bars

NEW ORLEANS — A jury in Jefferson Parish has convicted 28-year-old Sean Barrette of killing three individuals and attempting to murder three others during a violent crime spree in June 2019. The jury deliberated for only 90 minutes before reaching a verdict on eight charges, including three counts of first-degree murder.

During the two-week rampage, Barrette targeted strangers while driving his family’s SUV across East Jefferson, firing upon unsuspecting victims. The evidence against him included ballistic data linking him to the scenes, as well as a cell phone he left behind at one of the locations.

The series of shootings began on June 5, when Barrette allegedly opened fire on a couple in Kenner. On June 17, he targeted a woman on Interstate 10 and subsequently killed 22-year-old Isia Cadalzo-Sevilla in Metairie. The following day, he claimed the lives of 45-year-old Manuel Caronia and 57-year-old Nicky Robeau on West Metairie Avenue.

Barrette’s defense team argued that he suffered from mental illness, claiming he was unable to distinguish right from wrong. However, experts testified that he was cognizant of his actions and attempted to exploit his mental state to avoid accountability.

Law enforcement officials apprehended Barrette on June 18, 2019, shortly after the violent incidents. He now faces the possibility of life imprisonment, with sentencing scheduled for the upcoming Wednesday.

The case has garnered significant attention, raising concerns about random violence in the community. Local officials emphasize that this type of crime can have a profound impact on public safety and community well-being.

While Barrette’s attorneys continue to assert his mental health struggles, the strong evidence presented in court led the jury to deliver a swift verdict. The trial serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unchecked violence within society.
