Iowa City, Iowa — A man was arrested on drug-related charges following an explosion in a bathroom at a winter shelter early December 4. The incident prompted a swift response from local police and fire crews after reports of the blast were made from the Winter Extreme Temperature shelter.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found no ongoing fire but discovered significant damage in the restroom. The walls, sinks, and mirrors were marked by “charred splatter,” indicating the severity of the explosion. Inside one of the stalls, responders located a backpack that had melted due to the heat of the blast. After inspecting the bag, they identified a butane canister that had exploded, serving as the likely source of the incident.
Authorities identified the backpack as belonging to 44-year-old Abdiqani Haji Mohamud, who confirmed ownership when approached by officers. Mohamud, a known transient in the area, had prior encounters with the police, prompting them to conduct a search of his person. During a routine patdown, officers discovered methamphetamine concealed in his sock.
In the aftermath of the explosion, Mohamud explained to law enforcement that he had been smoking meth prior to the event. He stated that while attempting to place his lighter back into his backpack, the device ignited materials inside, causing the canister to detonate.
As a result, Mohamud is facing multiple drug charges, marking a troubling incident in a shelter designed to help those in need. Local officials emphasize the risks associated with substance use, particularly in shared spaces meant for vulnerable populations.
