Chhindwara, India — An investigation is underway by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) following the tragic deaths of several children attributed to contaminated cough syrup. This troubling situation has sparked alarm in Madhya Pradesh and neighboring Rajasthan.
Authorities confirmed that NCDC teams are actively gathering water and drug samples from hospitals and other affected locations to determine whether infectious diseases might be involved in these deaths. As the investigation continues, state drug officials are conducting tests on suspect batches of the cough syrup. Results from these tests are still pending.
The situation escalated significantly after six children in Chhindwara succumbed to kidney failure in recent weeks after reportedly consuming the cough syrup. Reports from Sikar district in Rajasthan also indicate a comparable death linked to similar symptoms. Local health experts revealed that affected children initially showed signs of fever and cold before developing severe urinary issues.
In response to these alarming developments, the Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation (RMSCL) has taken proactive measures by banning 19 batches of the syrup from circulation and issuing warnings to parents, medical practitioners, and pharmacies. They are encouraging heightened vigilance regarding the use of the syrup.
Investigators suspect the presence of diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic substance often misused in pharmaceuticals, may have contributed to these tragic incidents. DEG has previously been connected to mass poisoning events both in India and internationally, raising the stakes for public health officials.
As the NCDC awaits the results of toxicological examinations, the affected states have moved swiftly to withdraw the identified syrup batches from the market. Health departments are also urging healthcare providers to report any unusual cases of child illness that may be associated with cough syrup usage.
The investigation is ongoing, with assurance from central agencies that stringent actions will be taken should contamination be confirmed. Public health officials are working to prevent any further incidents while addressing the concerns that have arisen from these distressing occurrences.
