Investigation Reveals Engine Failure in Deadly Mooresville Plane Crash

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – The National Transportation Safety Board revealed that there was no distress call made by the pilot before a fatal crash in Mooresville on Sunday. However, evidence suggests that the plane’s engine was not producing power at the time of the crash, as stated by air safety investigator Lynn Spencer at a news conference.

The Piper Malibu Matrix had departed from Lake Norman Airpark and was headed northwest for 30 miles at 3,000 feet before attempting to return to the airpark. Spencer confirmed that the pilot, Randy Mysliviec, made a standard two-mile final radio call as he returned toward the airpark, and all parts of the aircraft were found at the crash site, ruling out an inflight breakup.

The Federal Aviation Administration, Lycoming Engines, and Piper Aircrafts are collaborating with the NTSB in the investigation. The preliminary investigation is underway, including a thorough search of the crash site before the aircraft is relocated to a salvage facility in Georgia. An engine evaluation will also be conducted in Georgia to gather more insights into the cause of the crash.

The NTSB has requested anyone with video or audio of the accident to share them for further investigation. The crash occurred around 12:15 p.m. Sunday as the plane was attempting to land at Lake Norman Airpark, ultimately resulting in the tragic death of the pilot. The N.C. Highway Patrol has secured the scene, and further details will be known as the investigation progresses.

The NTSB mentioned that a full report on the probable cause of the crash may take approximately 18 months. The investigation is ongoing, and any additional information on the accident is urged to be shared with the NTSB.
