WOBURN, Mass. — In a recent court hearing, Roy Booth, 42, admitted to the violent attack on a corrections officer at MCI-Shirley last year, resulting in severe injuries to the officer. The Middlesex Superior Court handed down a sentence of 13 to 15 years which Booth will serve consecutively to an existing life sentence for a previous murder conviction in Virginia.
The court found Booth guilty of mayhem and armed assault with intent to murder. He was accused of using a metal pole to beat Officer Matthew Tidman during a recreation period at the prison. On August 31, 2022, Booth reportedly took the metal pole from the gym’s weight room, concealing it until he struck Tidman from behind.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan highlighted the perilous nature of corrections work in light of the assault. “This case underscores the risks our correction officers face every day,” Ryan stated. “They deserve to work in a safe environment, and it’s a tragedy that Officer Tidman suffered such horrific injuries while on duty.”
Thankfully, despite the severity of his injuries, Officer Tidman survived. Initial treatments required him to be placed on life support. His recovery has been described by colleagues and family as miraculous.
Following the incident, Booth was transferred back to a Virginia state prison. His case was thoroughly investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, with assistance from Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office.
The legal proceedings were carried out by prosecutors Thomas Brant and Yashmeen Desai. They worked closely with Victim Witness Advocate Susie Marshall throughout the trial to ensure justice for Officer Tidman and his family.
Sentencing Booth, Judge Catherine Ham emphasized the need for a verdict that acknowledged both the gruesomeness of the attack and the security requirements for both the public and the law enforcement community.
