Indiana Teen Charged as Adult in Fatal Stabbing of Elderly Man After Alleged Robbery Attempt

ANDERSON, Ind. — In a shocking incident that has gripped the city of Anderson, 13-year-old Joseph VanNote has been charged as an adult in the murder case of 61-year-old Mark Miles. The crime, characterized by its brutal nature, occurred on October 3, 2024, and has since sparked widespread discussions on juvenile justice and violent crime.

On the fateful day, authorities were summoned to Miles’ residence located in the 900 block of West 12th Street after a friend, concerned for his well-being, discovered his body. Upon arrival, officers found Miles deceased, lying in a substantial amount of blood, with a bloody kitchen knife found nearby, an unsettling testament to the violence that had occurred.

Further unsettling discoveries were made when a passerby informed police officers about a wallet handed to him by strangers, which was later identified as belonging to Miles. The subsequent autopsy revealed that Miles had suffered multiple stab wounds, including a critical one to the chest, confirming the violent nature of his death.

Investigations led authorities to Joseph VanNote, whose mother contacted the police to report her son’s sudden possession of a significant sum of money. She revealed that VanNote claimed to have obtained $500 by begging at a local gas station, a story that quickly began to unravel under police scrutiny.

During interrogation, VanNote presented conflicting accounts of the events. Initially, he claimed that Miles had acted aggressively towards him, a claim he later retracted. His final account disclosed a chilling sequence of events; he followed Miles from the gas station with the intention to rob him. VanNote recounted that after being invited in and subsequently asked to leave by Miles, he resisted, instead seizing a kitchen knife and attacking Miles during a confrontation.

In a heart-wrenching detail, VanNote allegedly told investigators that Miles pleaded for his life during the attack, saying, “you’re killing me,” to which VanNote responded by continuing to stab him, ultimately fleeing with the victim’s wallet and cash.

This case took a significant turn on January 27, 2025, when VanNote was waived to adult court, reflecting the severity of the crime. Held without bond at the Madison County Jail, a trial date is set for April 25, 2025, with VanNote being represented by a public defender.

The circumstances of this case raise profound questions about juvenile crime and the factors motivating such violent actions. Authorities continue to investigate, seeking to understand the full scope of this tragic event. Meanwhile, the community remains in shock, grappling with the harsh realities of a youth involved in such a heinous act, prompting wider conversations on the need for interventions and support systems for at-risk youths.
