Providenciales, Turks and Caicos — A Cook County sheriff’s deputy, vacationing in Turks and Caicos, was shot and killed in a tragic incident that also claimed the life of a local resident. The shooting occurred near a popular restaurant on Grace Bay Road around 10 p.m. last Saturday.
Deputy Shamone Duncan, along with Dario Stubbs, a resident of the area, were fatally wounded near the bustling dining spot. A third individual, a 29-year-old man, was also injured during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Authorities reported that the shots were fired following an altercation near the location. However, they have found no indication that Duncan, Stubbs, or the injured party were intended targets. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the tragedy.
Duncan, who had been with the Cook County Department of Corrections for over two decades, was attending a birthday celebration for her sister at Aziza Restaurant & Lounge at the time of the incident. Tragically, she was struck by a stray bullet as gunfire erupted outside following a dispute that had broken out nearby.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene where partygoers were told to duck for cover as the shooting began. Despite efforts by bystanders to assist her, Duncan’s injuries proved fatal.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office expressed profound grief over Duncan’s death, remembering her as a dedicated public servant and a beloved member of the Chicago community where she was born and raised.
In addition to her long-standing career in law enforcement, Duncan was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her commitment to her family and her community made her a respected and treasured figure.
This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of violence that can tragically impact lives, even in settings meant for relaxation and celebration. The local police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward to aid in their ongoing investigation.
While the community and Duncan’s colleagues mourn her loss, they also celebrate her life, marked by service, dedication, and love. The case remains under investigation as local authorities and the community seek answers and justice for the senseless act of violence that cut short her life.
