Hyderabad, India — Authorities in Telangana are intensifying efforts to combat the illegal sale and transportation of toddy, a traditional alcoholic beverage, following a surge in health crises linked to contaminated products. The state’s Excise and Prohibition Department’s State Task Force (STF) recently apprehended five individuals implicated in these illicit activities, marking a significant step toward safeguarding public health.
In a series of coordinated operations across the city, law enforcement officials confiscated 420 liters of toddy and six motorcycles used for transportation. These actions came in response to alarming incidents in Kukatpally, where residents suffered severe health repercussions, including multiple fatalities attributed to the consumption of adulterated toddy. The wave of incidents has raised considerable concern regarding public safety.
During one inspection in the Nalla Cheruvu area of Uppal, officers halted three individuals—Ranga Srikanth, Lodi Anil, and Badiga Naveen—who were caught transporting 25 liters of toddy without the necessary permits. In a separate operation at Ghatkesar, Lodi Sandeep was discovered with 82 liters of the beverage, which was confiscated immediately.
The crackdown also led to the detention of Lodi Mahender and Mada Ramesh, who were found in possession of 124 liters of toddy. Each of the seized samples has been sent for forensic testing to determine potential adulteration. The testing aims to inspect for hazardous substances that may have been mixed into the product, including sedatives like alprazolam, often reported in unlicensed vendors’ offerings.
Additionally, inspections at three toddy depots in Saroornagar, Ramanthapur, and Uppal revealed further risks, prompting officials to collect samples for laboratory analysis. The authorities are keen to uncover the extent of contamination and monitor unsafe practices within the industry.
Officials have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on unauthorized sellers and transporters to protect consumers and rebuild public trust in the market. Stringent measures are set to follow as the investigation unfolds and the scope of the issue is fully assessed.
As the health crisis deepens, the Telangana government emphasizes the importance of regulatory compliance in the sale of toddy. Measures aimed at enforcing existing laws will likely deter illegal activities and mitigate the associated health risks. The community’s safety remains a top priority as local authorities navigate this ongoing concern.
