HPD: Intruder shot in head at north Houston apartment

Police say a man trying to force entry into an apartment was shot and died at the scene before sunrise.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police launched a homicide investigation early Thursday after a man was shot to death outside an apartment on Airline Drive. Officers were dispatched shortly after 5 a.m. to The Catania apartments and found the man with a gunshot wound in a breezeway near a stairwell.

Investigators said early accounts indicate the man was attempting to break into a unit when someone inside fired once. The resident remained on-site and spoke with officers, who secured the area and collected physical evidence. Detectives emphasized the details could shift as they review body camera footage, canvass for surveillance video and take formal statements. Authorities did not immediately release the man’s name. Officials said the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will confirm his identity and cause of death.

By sunrise, a cluster of HPD units blocked a lane along Airline Drive as crime scene tape bracketed a staircase and landing. Technicians photographed the door, hinges and threshold while detectives paced the breezeway, comparing witness accounts with the position of shell casings and blood patterns. “It’s very preliminary, but what we have suggests a forced-entry attempt,” an HPD watch commander said at the complex, noting that the investigation would test that narrative against video and physical markings on the door.

Residents in nearby buildings told officers they heard a single shot and the sound of running feet, followed by sirens. A security guard provided access to camera feeds that cover the parking lot and walkway intersections; detectives requested copies from the property manager. Inside the taped area, a single set of evidence markers was visible near the top step. Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department pronounced the man dead after assessing him on the landing. No additional injuries were reported, police said.

HPD said the case will be routed, as standard, to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for review once detectives complete their interviews and evidence processing. Prosecutors commonly present potential self-defense shootings to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges are appropriate. Officials released no information about the caliber of the weapon involved, how many shots were fired beyond the initial report of one, or whether the resident had previously contacted police about threats or disturbances at the apartment.

The Catania sits north of the North Freeway in a corridor of older complexes and small businesses along Airline Drive. The area sees heavy commuter traffic before dawn, and several residents said they were preparing for early shifts when they noticed the police presence. By midmorning, tape came down and residents moved freely through the breezeway. Detectives continued canvassing for anyone who might have recorded video on phones or vehicle dash cameras while driving past the complex during the response.

As of late morning, police had not announced any arrests or charges. The next update is expected after the medical examiner confirms the man’s identity and detectives determine whether the facts will be presented to a grand jury.
