One man died and four others were injured after an argument escalated into an exchange of gunfire at a southeast Houston gathering.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police were searching Monday for a suspect after a shooting at a crowded southeast Houston parking lot left one man dead and four other people injured early Sunday, authorities said.
Officers responded around 4 a.m. Sunday to the 13300 block of Cullen Boulevard, where hundreds of people had gathered near a gas station and shopping center. The location is informally known by some regular visitors as “Club Chevron.” Police said an altercation broke out as people were leaving and escalated into gunfire involving more than one shooter.
Investigators said the confrontation began as a verbal dispute and became physical before a person opened fire toward the crowd. Houston Police Department Detective Alex Vinogradov said an SUV leaving the area made a U-turn on Cullen Boulevard and passed the shopping center from the opposite side of the street. Someone inside the vehicle then fired toward the gathering, and several people in the crowd returned fire, according to police.
Officers arriving at the scene encountered a large crowd and heard gunfire, police said. They found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Houston Fire Department crews took both to a hospital, where one of the men was pronounced dead. Authorities had not publicly identified the man who died as of Monday.
Three other injured people reached hospitals on their own, according to investigators. Police said two of them had been shot and another had been beaten during the confrontation. Authorities said the four surviving victims were expected to recover. ABC13 reported that investigators were still working to determine exactly how one of the five people counted among the injured had been hurt.
Police have not announced an arrest or released a description of the person they believe initiated the shooting. Investigators said Sunday they planned to review surveillance video from businesses in the area as they worked to identify the people who opened fire and determine the sequence of events.
The preliminary investigation indicates multiple people fired weapons after the initial shots. Police said at least one person who was wounded returned fire, but that person was not the man who died. Investigators have not publicly identified the other shooters or said whether any of them could face charges.
The shooting occurred during a large overnight gathering at the shopping center. Police said people had been socializing in the area before the confrontation. Reports from the scene described people playing pool and smoking hookah before the gathering began to break up. Authorities have not announced a confirmed motive beyond the dispute that preceded the gunfire.
The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division continued investigating Monday. No suspect had been publicly identified, and police had not announced any arrests in connection with the killing. Investigators were continuing to examine evidence and surveillance footage to determine who fired the shots and what led to the deadly confrontation.
