Houston Police Hunt Answers After Man Found Fatally Shot

A fatal apartment-complex shooting followed an attack that wounded two pedestrians less than half a mile away.

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police are investigating two shootings that occurred less than half a mile apart in northwest Houston within about 27 hours, while cautioning that investigators have not determined whether the attacks are connected.

The more recent shooting was reported at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday at the Oakwood Gardens apartments in the 5600 block of Antoine Drive. Officers found a man believed to be in his 60s lying outside with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal shooting happened near the site of a Friday night attack along West Tidwell Road. In that case, police said two men were walking and eating ice cream at about 10:20 p.m. when a car carrying four people pulled alongside them and at least one person opened fire.

One of the pedestrians was shot in the side of his abdomen, while the other was struck in an arm, police said. Both men were taken to a hospital in stable condition. Officers searching the area detained one person who police said provided information about the vehicle and others involved.

Investigators initially described the Friday shooting as an apparently random drive-by and said they believed it was an isolated event. Police had not publicly announced charges or identified all of the people believed to have been inside the vehicle.

In the Sunday case, investigators said they believe the victim walked to the apartment complex to confront someone. Police did not identify that person or explain the subject of the suspected confrontation. The victim’s name also had not been released.

Although the scenes were close and the shootings happened within roughly 48 hours, authorities said they did not know whether the cases were related. No shared suspect, vehicle, weapon or motive has been publicly identified.

The two investigations therefore remain separate unless evidence establishes a link. Detectives must determine whether the geographic and time proximity is significant or coincidental while continuing to identify the gunman in the fatal shooting.

Houston police had not announced an arrest in the apartment-complex killing as of Monday. The Homicide Division is investigating, and authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity near Antoine Drive early Sunday.
