A man in his 20s was killed and his mother was hospitalized after gunfire near Mesa Drive and Ley Road.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police are searching for a gunman after a man in his 20s was killed and his mother was wounded in a shooting Saturday evening in northeast Houston.
Officers were called shortly before 5:30 p.m. Aug. 8 to the area of Mesa Drive and Ley Road. Police found the male victim dead at the scene, while a second person was taken to a hospital. Investigators later identified the hospitalized victim as the man’s mother. Her condition had not been publicly released as of Sunday.
Houston Police Department homicide investigators remained at the scene for hours Saturday evening. Police have not released the name of the man who died or his mother, and authorities have not announced a possible motive for the shooting.
Investigators said the suspected gunman is also believed to be a man in his 20s. Police gathered information about the suspect after interviewing the wounded woman at the hospital. Authorities said the suspect fled the scene on foot and remained at large as the investigation continued.
The shooting occurred near the 8000 block of Mesa Drive, close to Ley Road. People at the scene said a gathering was being held in the parking lot of a lounge following a funeral. Police have not publicly detailed what happened immediately before the gunfire or whether the victims and suspected shooter knew one another.
The shooting was initially reported Saturday as investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the gunfire. Police had released few details during the first hours of the investigation beyond confirming that one person had died and another had been hospitalized.
By early Sunday, investigators had provided additional information showing that the victims were a mother and son and that the younger man was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the man had not been publicly announced, and officials had not disclosed whether formal identification procedures had been completed.
No arrest had been announced as of Sunday. Police also had not released a detailed description of the suspected gunman beyond saying he was believed to be in his 20s. Investigators have not publicly identified a vehicle connected to the suspect or explained what evidence they recovered from the scene.
