BRECKENRIDGE, Mich. – A tragic incident unfolded in Gratiot County as investigators work to unravel the circumstances behind a devastating house explosion. The explosion resulted in a fire that claimed the life of a 34-year-old woman, leaving a man and a child critically injured.
The emergency response teams rushed to the scene on Chestnut Street in Breckenridge around 4 a.m. following reports of the explosion. Neighbors recounted hearing unusual sounds in the early hours but were shocked to discover the blaze and smoke engulfing the residence.
Lois Ward, a neighbor who witnessed the events, described the overwhelming sight as the flames quickly intensified. Another resident, who chose not to be identified, expressed the urgency of the situation due to concerns for her children’s health amid the thick smoke.
Upon arrival, Gratiot County sheriff deputies found a man outside the home with severe burns, indicating that his girlfriend and daughter were still trapped inside. Firefighters were able to contain the fire and rescue the woman and child, but sadly, the woman did not survive. The child was swiftly transported to Hurley Children’s Hospital for urgent medical attention.
As the man and child remain in critical condition, the community mourns the loss of the woman and two dogs that perished in the blaze. Authorities suspect that the fire originated from an internal explosion, although the exact cause remains unknown and under investigation.
