Home Detention for Baltimore Man After Violent Assault on Elderly Pro-Life Activists Outside Planned Parenthood

Baltimore, Md. — A 28-year-old man was sentenced this week to a year of home detention and three years of probation for his role in a violent incident outside a Planned Parenthood clinic that severely injured two pro-life activists. The decision by Baltimore Circuit Judge Yvette M. Bryant came after Patrick Brice was convicted on two counts of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment stemming from the May 2023 attack.

Prosecutors had sought a harsher punishment, recommending a 10-year prison sentence, but the judge opted for a more lenient sentence. During the proceedings, one victim, 73-year-old Mark Crosby, expressed his frustration with the sentence, emphasizing his own rights and well-being as he confronted the judge.

Brice claimed he intended to engage in a debate regarding moral issues with Richard Schaefer, 84, another pro-life advocate present during the attack. According to Brice, his anger escalated after Schaefer made a comment he interpreted as racially insensitive. Surveillance footage captured the moment he shoved Schaefer into a flowerpot and subsequently assaulted Crosby when he intervened.

“I just snapped one day,” Brice said in court, where he later apologized to both victims. As part of his sentencing requirements, he is mandated to complete anger management courses, submit to drug and alcohol screenings, and continue with therapy.

Crosby’s injuries were severe; reports indicate he suffered lasting damage to his right eye as a result of the assault. Following the attack, images shared on social media depicted Crosby with visible swelling and blood on his face, highlighting the brutality of the incident.

Tom Brejcha, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Society, condemned the attack, describing it not as a mere altercation but as a deliberate assault on vulnerable individuals engaged in a peaceful demonstration. Brejcha stated that one victim was left unconscious while the other sustained broken facial bones and ongoing eye impairment, labeling the act as cowardly and unprovoked.

The violent episode unfolded during a time when Crosby and other volunteers were praying outside the clinic, offering support to expectant mothers. A GoFundMe page created in response to the attack illustrated the community’s effort to support Crosby, who had been a long-time advocate for pro-life ideals.

Accounts from police reports reveal that witnesses described the assault following what appeared to be a debate over differing views on abortion. One witness noted that Brice approached the volunteers before aggressively confronting Schaefer, indicating a premeditated element to the attack.

Crosby’s attorney delivered a statement in court, characterizing the assault as a blatant disregard for both legal and moral standards. He urged for recognition of the gravity of the event, highlighting the vulnerability of elderly activists who were caught off guard by the sudden violence.

Overall, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of individuals participating in public demonstrations, particularly regarding the increasingly polarized discussions surrounding issues like abortion. As debates continue, this case serves as a stark reminder of the potential for conflict when differing beliefs intersect in public spaces.
