Abuja, Nigeria — Authorities reported that a multiple vehicle collision on the Karu Bridge left three individuals injured but resulted in no fatalities. The incident, involving six vehicles, occurred around 3 p.m. and is currently under investigation by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The crash involved a Dangote truck, a bus operated by Setraco, a commercial Peugeot J5, a black Toyota Camry, a Bajaj motorcycle, and a Peugeot 406. According to FRSC Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide, the accident impacted 35 individuals, overwhelmingly men, with three male victims suffering from various injuries including head trauma, fractures, and bruises.
Emergency responders quickly transported the injured parties to Asokoro General Hospital and Nyanya General Hospital for medical care. The FRSC, alongside police units from the Karu Division, coordinated rescue efforts and worked to manage traffic in the aftermath of the collision.
Preliminary assessments identified loss of control as a key factor in the crash. Ogungbemide pointed out that inadequate road signage at the construction zone, overseen by a Chinese construction firm, may have contributed to the incident. He emphasized the importance of proper signaling and signage in construction areas to enhance safety for all road users.
The involved vehicles have been secured by local police, and the FRSC is urging construction firms to take necessary precautions to prevent similar accidents in the future. As investigations continue, officials are focusing on ensuring that thorough safety measures are implemented to protect motorists and commuters.
The swift response from the FRSC and police exemplifies the commitment to public safety on the roads, a vital concern given the high traffic volumes in the area. Stakeholders are advised to remain vigilant and prioritize safety, especially in construction zones, to mitigate risks associated with road travel.
