Greenville, NC — A dramatic standoff in Greenville ended with a son holding the alleged murderer of his parents at gunpoint until authorities arrived, according to local officials. The suspect, identified as 55-year-old David Lever, faced his initial court hearing on Monday following his weekend arrest on charges related to the deaths of three individuals, including a married couple.
The distressing incident unfolded when deputies from the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple crime scenes on Friday. They discovered three adults fatally shot, sparking a multi-site investigation. The victims were later identified as Anthony Gribble, 80, Paula Gribble, 76, and 64-year-old Enrique Reyes, all residents of Greenville.
Pitt County Sheriff Paula Dance highlighted the critical role played by the Gribbles’ son during a news briefing. She credited his quick action with potentially saving further lives. “Our investigation leads us to believe that the intervention of a family member crucially prevented more casualties before our deputies could secure the scene,” Dance stated.
Authorities revealed a startling discovery at Lever’s residence, finding an arsenal of at least 50 firearms and substantial ammunition reserves in his van. This cache underscored the potential for further violence had the situation escalated.
Detailing the events leading up to the tragic shootings, Sheriff Dance explained that Reyes, who shared a road with Lever, was likely the first victim. Lever was spotted leaving his home shortly after Reyes returned from a local store. Witnesses then reported Lever firing shots as he departed from a nearby gas station, proceeding in the direction of the Gribbles’ home on Peace Ridge Court.
Subsequent calls to law enforcement described the grim discovery of the Gribbles and a later report of a home invasion and additional gunfire at another property, which was found to be unoccupied, but linked to Lever.
Expressing sympathy to those impacted by the tragedy, Dance extended her condolences to the families and friends of the victims. She emphasized the deep community sorrow provoked by these violent acts.
Interestingly, Lever had a prior connection with the Gribbles, having served as their realtor when they purchased their home in 2014. This detail might provide a glimpse into the possible relationships and interactions leading up to the incident, although police have not disclosed a motive.
Lever is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 29 as the investigation continues. The community remains shaken by the event, with local officials and residents rallying around the grieving families during this challenging time.
