Butler, PA — Community members and loved ones are mourning the loss of Corey Comperatore, a devoted family man and firefighter, who tragically lost his life while shielding his family during a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Authorities confirmed that the incident, which resulted in Comperatore’s death, occurred during an attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump, making headlines nationwide.
At the rally, which was part of Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign, violence erupted unexpectedly when shots were fired by a gunman identified by officials as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Crooks was subsequently shot and killed by Secret Service agents at the scene. The attack is being investigated as an assassination attempt by the FBI.
Corey Comperatore, remembered for his selflessness and dedication to his community, was attending the rally with his family. According to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Comperatore instinctively acted to protect his loved ones, covering them with his body when the gunfire started.
In Gov. Shapiro’s words, Comperatore was a heartfelt community servant known for his regular church attendance and love for his family. “Corey was a girl dad. Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday. Corey loved his community. Most especially, Corey loved his family,” Shapiro reflected.
Helen Comperatore, Corey’s widow, shared the harrowing last moments with her husband, who she described as her hero. According to her, his last words were, “Get down!” — a final act to ensure the safety of his family.
The wider community expressed their grief and respect for Comperatore, with neighbors and friends hailing his bravery. Mike Morehouse, a longtime neighbor, described the profound impact of the tragedy on his decision to engage more actively in civic duties. “As soon as I heard what happened and then learned that it was to Corey, I went upstairs as soon as I got home and I registered to vote,” Morehouse said, adding, “This is the first time I’ve ever voted and I think it will be in his memory.”
In addition to Comperatore, the shooting incident left two other victims critically injured, who are currently receiving medical care at Allegheny General Hospital. They were identified by state officials as David Dutch and James Copenhaver, both of whom are in stable condition.
The local Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, where Comperatore was a lifetime member, honored him by displaying his uniform and describing him as a brother, son, husband, father, and friend.
Amidst this tragedy, a GoFundye campaign set up for the victims’ families saw an overwhelming response, raising more than $4.3 million by Monday afternoon, far exceeding its initial goal.
President Joe Biden expressed his condolences, highlighting Comperatore’s actions as those of a father protecting his family. “We are also praying for the full recovery of those who were injured,” Biden added during his statement.
