Hutchinson, KS — Local fire officials in Hutchinson have released dashcam footage from the battalion chief’s vehicle that captured a gas explosion in the town’s center on Saturday. The incident, which took place just before 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Avenue E and South Main Street, occurred after authorities were alerted to a gas odor.
Upon arrival, first responders commenced their operations in line with established safety protocols in an attempt to locate the source of the leak. Initially unable to pinpoint the gas origin, they extended their search along Main Street. They discovered visible gas emissions coming through both the road and sidewalk near a business at the corner of Avenue E and Main Street.
Fire crews entered the business where their monitoring equipment immediately indicated a hazardous level of gas. Officials confirmed that the building was evacuated, and shortly after the evacuation — within 30 seconds — the building erupted in flames. The dramatic scene was captured on the dashcam footage, which was later shared by the fire department.
Prompt action by the fire department ensured that all occupants of the building were safely evacuated before the explosion occurred, preventing any injuries. Following the explosion, an extensive area from Avenue A to Frank Hart Crossing and from Popular Street to Adams Street was initially cordoned off and evacuated as a safety precaution.
Later on the same day, authorities were able to narrow down the evacuation zone to an area stretching from Avenue C to Avenue F, and from Walnut to Adams. The revised perimeter allowed some residents and business owners to return to their properties under caution.
