NEW ORLEANS – A tragic carjacking incident in a Louisiana parking lot has left a community mourning the loss of Carl Morgan, a dedicated sous chef and father. Morgan was fatally shot while picking up his young son from a day care on Tuesday evening, igniting sorrow among family, friends, and colleagues.
Christian Pendleton, general manager at Brennan’s Restaurant where Morgan worked, described him as not only a skilled chef but also a devoted parent. “Everyone is feeling the raw pain of this loss. Carl truly cherished his role as a father,” Pendleton said. This incident marks a heartbreaking reminder of the violence that can strike unexpectedly.
Authorities reported that the shooting took place around 5:15 p.m. at the Abeona House Child Discovery Center on Canal Street. New Orleans Police Superintendent Nicholas Gernon identified the alleged shooter as 21-year-old Raymond Wells. Wells was later discovered on Interstate 10, gravely injured with a gunshot wound, possibly self-inflicted, while still inside the stolen vehicle.
Superintendent Gernon revealed that gunfire erupted nearby before Morgan was shot, suggesting a sequence of chaotic events. “Witnesses indicated that Wells may have opened fire nearby before targeting Morgan in the carjacking,” Gernon stated. After the shooting, Wells fled the scene only to be found hours later in critical condition.
In the wake of this tragedy, Morgan’s partner expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing the profound impact of his death on their child and family. “This senseless act took away a father, a partner, and a vibrant spirit from our community,” she lamented.
Pastor Shawn Anglim, of First Grace United Methodist Church near the day care, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the resilience of the community as they grapple with the senselessness of the tragedy. Anglim noted that a teacher from the day care rushed to secure the children when the gunfire erupted, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Morgan was regarded as a leader both in the kitchen and in life, with many friends noting his infectious enthusiasm. Brennen’s plans to honor his legacy at the upcoming Fried Chicken Festival by featuring his signature fried chicken sandwich. Pendleton remarked, “Cooking and sharing Carl’s creations will remind everyone of his bright spirit. Proceeds from the festival will aid his family.”
