Hull, England — An 18-month prison sentence has been handed down to a 31-year-old mother of two who launched a violent hammer attack on a woman at a local pub after learning of an affair between her boyfriend and the victim. The incident, which occurred last April at the Fiveways Hotel in Hessle, left the victim with serious facial injuries and profound mental distress.
The assailant, Kirsty Allen, was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm, affray, and possession of an offensive weapon following the attack, which prosecutors described as sudden and unprovoked. Court proceedings revealed that Allen’s attack was motivated by a discovery of infidelity involving her boyfriend while she was pregnant.
According to prosecuting attorney Emma Handley, Allen had initially approached the woman on a prior occasion without conflict, but the situation escalated during the April encounter. Allen confronted the victim at the pub, striking her in the face with a hammer as she sat unsuspecting with her back turned.
The assault resulted in immediate chaos at the venue, with patrons fleeing and intervening to subdue Allen. The victim suffered a depressed fracture to her cheekbone and substantial psychological trauma. In a statement, she expressed fear of recurring violence and described a significant decline in her mental health, highlighting increased social anxiety and isolation as aftereffects of the assault.
Legal defense for Allen attributed part of her actions to emotional distress caused by her boyfriend’s betrayal during her pregnancy. They also stressed that Allen, who is remorseful, viewed the tool as a household item rather than a weapon meant for assault.
The court was informed of Allen’s prior criminal record, which includes 11 offenses ranging from assault during her youth. Despite her defense’s appeal to her turbulent emotions and the personal turmoil she experienced, the judge deemed immediate incarceration necessary given the severity of the assault and the danger it posed to public safety.
Judge Mark Bury, presiding over the case, pointed out the alarming nature of the attack, particularly as it occurred near a child playing at a pool table, exacerbating the recklessness of Allen’s actions. The CCTV footage presented in court underscored the shocking and violent nature of the assault.
