Haldwani District Magistrate Confirms Communal Violence was “Pre-Planned and Unprovoked” as Death Toll Revised to Two

Haldwani, in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, is grappling with communal violence following the demolition of an illegally constructed madrasa in the area. District magistrate Vandana Singh labeled the violence as “pre-planned and unprovoked,” pointing to the attack’s initiation in Banbhoolpura after the demolition. The attackers reportedly gathered stones on rooftops before commencing the assault.

Singh further detailed that the perpetrators utilized petrol bombs, fired at the Banbhulpura police station, and set vehicles ablaze. She emphasized that the violence was premeditated, with the mob targeting state machinery and symbols without attempting to protect the structure. Additionally, Singh mentioned that 15-20 individuals incited the crowd during the demolition by the municipal corporation team.

Moreover, the district magistrate revised the death toll from the violence to two, which was initially reported as three to four, due to confusion. She confirmed the arrest of four suspects and the registration of three FIRs related to the incident. The police have also identified over two dozen individuals who incited the violence, according to Nainital senior superintendent of police Prahlad Narayan Meena.

The unrest prompted the district administration to impose a curfew and issue a “shoot-at-sight” order against the rioters. Additionally, the police reported at least 100 injuries resulting from the violence.

The situation in Haldwani exemplifies a concerning escalation of communal tensions, particularly in the aftermath of the madrasa’s demolition. The district’s authorities underscore the need for a peaceful resolution to prevent further bloodshed and destruction in the community. The presence of law enforcement and the swift arrest of suspects are crucial steps in restoring order and ensuring the safety of residents in Haldwani.
