Gunmen Unleash 27 Shots in West Philly, Killing Young Woman

Surveillance video shows multiple gunmen firing dozens of rounds at a victim.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Police are investigating an ambush-style shooting in West Philadelphia that left a 20-year-old woman dead and two others wounded after a burst of gunfire erupted Tuesday evening.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded around 6:20 p.m. near the intersection of 60th and Market streets. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found three victims at the scene. The young woman later died from multiple gunshot wounds, while two others were hospitalized in stable condition.

Investigators said surveillance footage shows a dark SUV pulling up before several men jumped out and began firing. Chief Inspector Scott Small described the attack as deliberate, noting that one of the gunmen approached the victim after she had fallen and fired additional shots at close range.

Police recovered dozens of shell casings from the area, pointing to an intense and rapid exchange of gunfire. Ballistics evidence indicates at least two different firearms were used, including what investigators believe may have been a semi-automatic rifle. The large number of shots fired suggests a coordinated effort, officials said.

The victim was walking along the street at the time of the shooting and was not accompanied by anyone. Investigators are working to determine whether she was specifically targeted or whether the shooting was connected to a broader dispute. The roles of the other two victims also remain unclear as detectives piece together the circumstances.

Authorities said nearby surveillance systems captured key moments of the attack, providing investigators with footage that may help identify the suspects and track the vehicle involved. Detectives have been reviewing video from multiple angles and speaking with residents and business owners in the area.

No arrests have been made, and police have not released descriptions of the suspects. Officials said the investigation remains in its early stages, with detectives focusing on forensic evidence, witness accounts, and digital footage to build a timeline of events.

The shooting has raised concerns about public safety in a heavily traveled part of West Philadelphia, where businesses and transit routes draw steady foot traffic. Officials said incidents involving high volumes of gunfire can increase the risk of unintended victims, as investigators continue to determine whether bystanders were struck.

Police said the Homicide Unit is leading the case and coordinating efforts to identify those responsible. Authorities are expected to release additional details as new information becomes available.

The case remained unsolved as of Wednesday, with investigators urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to examine evidence and pursue leads.
