HOUSTON, Texas – Authorities revealed that the shooter at a prominent Texas megachurch had a history of mental illness and brought their young son to the attack. The incident, which occurred during the Sunday service, ended in an exchange of gunfire with two off-duty officers. The shooter was identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, 36, who used both male and female aliases. The attack took place at the Lakewood Church, led by Pastor Joel Osteen, and sent panicked worshippers scrambling for safety.
Moreno’s 7-year-old son was shot in the head during the shooting and remained in critical condition, while Moreno was killed by the officers. The motive behind the attack has not been established, but investigators are looking into a dispute involving Moreno and the family of Moreno’s ex-husband. They also found antisemitic writings by the shooter and a “Palestine” sticker on the rifle used in the attack.
The shooter had a turbulent history, with prior arrests and involvement in a divorce and child custody battle in 2022. Furthermore, court records revealed that Moreno had been charged in six criminal cases from 2005 to 2011, including assault and theft. Moreno appeared to have legally purchased the rifle used in the attack in December. Investigators are looking into how Moreno obtained it as well as the .22 caliber rifle carried into the church.
During the attack, off-duty Houston police officer Christopher Moreno and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Agent Adrian Herrera returned fire and killed the shooter. The confrontation lasted several minutes, but the violence did not spill into the main sanctuary. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner stated that there was no evidence of explosives after the shooter claimed there was a bomb at the scene.
