EDINA, Minn. — A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 33½ years in prison for the shooting death of Darien Jamal Roberson, which occurred after a birthday celebration at a local restaurant. Kayvon Julian-Breaun Madison, from Bloomington, faced an upward departure from usual sentencing guidelines as a Hennepin County District Court judge deemed the act particularly egregious.
Madison had previously entered a straight plea to charges of second-degree murder, indicating no plea deal was reached between his defense team and the prosecution. In delivering the sentence, Judge Juan Hoyos highlighted the nature of the crime as being “more onerous” than typical cases, warranting a tougher penalty.
Madison has already spent 531 days in custody, which will be credited to his sentence. The shooting took place on December 2, 2023, around 9 p.m. in a strip mall parking lot along 70th Street, directly across from the Galleria shopping center. Madison was among those who called 911 to report the incident, claiming self-defense, stating that Roberson “came at me.”
However, witnesses contradicted Madison’s claims, revealing a history of discord between him and Roberson dating back to 2021. This disagreement reportedly stemmed from issues surrounding a mutual friend who died from a drug overdose. Surveillance footage from the scene further undermined Madison’s defense, failing to substantiate his assertion that Roberson initiated the confrontation.
According to statements made by witnesses, the argument escalated quickly after Madison confronted Roberson about his deceased friend’s life choices. The encounter turned deadly when Madison pulled out a firearm and shot Roberson multiple times, striking him five times in total.
The emotional toll of the shooting reverberated through the community, with family and friends of Roberson expressing their grief. They reflect on the potential future that was taken away from the young man, who was just 21 years old at the time of his death.
