BUSHWICK, Brooklyn — A shooting late Monday night left one man dead and another injured, raising concerns in a neighborhood grappling with an uptick in violent crime. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Putnam Avenue, where police arrived to find two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Authorities reported that a 39-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, while a 63-year-old sustained an injury to his right eye. Emergency responders transported both men to a nearby hospital, where the younger victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The deceased has been identified as Ramel Fisher. The older victim, though injured, is currently in stable condition.
Detectives are still piecing together the events leading up to the shooting, and no information on potential suspects has been released. Witnesses have also yet to come forward, leaving law enforcement with limited leads in the case.
In a troubling trend, this incident marks the sixth homicide investigated by the 83rd Precinct this year. In stark contrast, the precinct recorded only one murder in the entirety of 2022. While overall crime rates in New York City have decreased, this spike in violence has alarmed residents and local officials.
Community leaders have expressed their concerns, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures and resources to tackle the rising crime rates in the area. The neighborhood of Bushwick, historically known for its vibrant culture and artistic influence, now faces the challenge of addressing gun violence.
As the investigation continues, police urge anyone with information to come forward. So far, there have been no arrests made, leaving the community anxious for answers and justice as they seek to reclaim the sense of safety they once knew.
