Police have no announced arrests after witnesses reported seeing several unidentified men firing before fleeing the crowded parking lot.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston homicide detectives are trying to identify a group of men seen fleeing a northeast Houston shooting after a crowd scattered from the scene, leaving investigators with few clear answers about the gunfire that killed one man and wounded another.
The shooting was reported at about 10:05 p.m. July 29 at 4902 Laura Koppe Road, where people had gathered outside a neighborhood business. Police found a 26-year-old man dead in the parking lot and learned that a second man had been taken by private vehicle to a hospital. No arrests had been announced, and investigators had not released a motive.
Witnesses told police they saw a group of unidentified men shooting in the area and then running away. Authorities did not know which direction they went. Police have not released names, clothing descriptions, vehicle information or other identifying details that could narrow the search.
Investigators faced a difficult scene because many people left as the gunfire began. A Houston police lieutenant told local media that cars and people scattered during the shooting, limiting the number of witnesses available to explain what happened. Detectives have not said whether anyone who remained could identify a shooter.
The man who died was found lying in the parking lot when officers arrived. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities described him as 26 but withheld his name pending notification of his family by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The second man was inside a vehicle when he was struck. He was driven from the scene to a hospital, police said. News reports initially described him as critically injured, while a later Houston police statement listed him in stable condition. His identity and further details about his recovery have not been released.
Police said both men may have been bystanders rather than participants in the confrontation. People had gathered at the location for what authorities and local reports described as a neighborhood domino game. Detectives have not explained whether an argument began during the gathering or whether the shooters arrived because of a separate dispute.
Accounts of the physical evidence have varied. Local reports offered conflicting descriptions of the cartridge casings recovered from the parking lot. Houston police confirmed that several men were reportedly seen shooting but did not identify the type of firearm in the department’s written statement. Investigators also have not publicly stated how many weapons were used.
The case remained under investigation without an announced suspect, arrest or charge. Houston police asked anyone with information to call the Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS as detectives work to establish the sequence of events and identify those who fled.
