The catastrophe struck on October 7, 2022, when a suspected gas explosion obliterated a retail and residential complex, resulting in tragic fatalities and substantial wreckage. Leona Harper was tragically the last victim to be retrieved from the debris.
In the fallout of the disaster, law enforcement initiated a comprehensive multi-agency probe, meticulously examining the remnants of the building to determine the cause and potential culpability. Recent months have seen some developments in the investigation, with four individuals arrested in connection to the incident over the past six months. Two men were arrested in March and another man and a woman in May, all under the Republic’s Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, though they were later released without charges.
As the second anniversary of the explosion approaches, Mr. Harper praised the work of the investigators. “I believe that they are doing a good job and we have built a very strong relationship with them,” he shared. Mr. Harper further acknowledged the personal toll the investigation has taken on those involved. “We have learned to realize that at the end of the day, they are human beings with an incredibly demanding and challenging job.
