Grand Island Man Found Guilty of Murder and Assault in Deadly Clothing Dispute

Buffalo, NY – A jury has recently convicted Ronald F. Olson II, a 44-year-old resident of Grand Island, on charges including murder and assault. The verdict, announced by Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane, followed a five-day trial and eight hours of deliberation.

The incident dates back to March 20, 2023, when Olson approached a Jeep Liberty at a gas station in Buffalo, attempting to sell clothing to the occupants. After an altercation, the driver of the Jeep left the area with Olson in pursuit in his Chevrolet Silverado. In a reckless display of indifference to human life, Olson struck the Jeep, causing it to crash and resulting in the death of 18-year-old Jarel Buchanan, the driver. The four passengers in the Jeep sustained serious injuries but survived.

Olson now faces a potential maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 20, 2024, before Erie County Court Judge James Bargnesi. Despite being held without bail, Olson’s actions have left a lasting impact on the victims and their families.

Acting DA Keane emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that no article of clothing is worth a life. The successful conviction on all counts brings a sense of closure to the case, although the scars left by the tragedy remain. The diligence of Detective Mark White and the Buffalo Police Department in investigating the incident has been crucial to the legal process.

The prosecution, led by Chief Paul J. Glascott and Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Marino, ensured that justice was served for all victims involved. The support of the community and the legal team in pursuing accountability for Olson’s reckless actions highlights the importance of upholding safety and responsibility in the face of tragedy. The efforts of all parties in seeking justice and closure for the victims reflect a commitment to serving and protecting the community.
