Investigators said the girl found her mother’s unsecured handgun while alone in a closet at a northwest Harris County home.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 4-year-old girl died after investigators said she found her mother’s handgun in a closet and accidentally shot herself at a northwest Harris County home late Thursday, authorities said.
The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Aug. 27 in the Champions area, where Harris County Precinct 4 deputies responded to a residence near FM 1960. The girl was found wounded and was taken to a hospital, where she later died, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators said the child had been alone inside a closet when she came across the firearm.
The girl’s mother and a 10-year-old sibling were also home when the shooting occurred, authorities said. Investigators were interviewing both family members as they worked to determine how the younger child entered the closet and gained access to the handgun. Officials had not publicly identified the girl as of Friday.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Brown said the firearm belonged to the girl’s mother and had been stored in the closet. Brown said investigators did not believe the weapon had been secured. Authorities were continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the gun’s storage and the child’s access to it.
Brown said investigators believed the shooting was accidental based on the information available early in the investigation. The sheriff’s office had not announced evidence suggesting another person fired the weapon or that the child’s death resulted from an intentional act.
The investigation remained focused on reconstructing what happened inside the home before deputies arrived. Authorities were seeking to establish how the child reached the firearm, how it had been stored and what family members knew about the events leading up to the shooting.
No charges had been announced Friday. Brown said charges were possible, but authorities had not said that a charging decision had been made. The Houston Chronicle reported that the Harris County District Attorney’s Office would review potential charges after the sheriff’s investigation is completed.
The case remained under investigation Friday, with authorities continuing interviews and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the firearm’s storage and the child’s access to the closet.
