The incident happened around 5 p.m. Saturday in a two-story home located in the 2200 block of Central Avenue. According to Cicero Fire Chief Jeff Penzkofer, the explosion was so powerful that it destroyed the entire front of the building and hurled bricks across the street, also causing damage to at least two neighboring structures.
Penzkofer indicated that signs such as blown-out windows and displaced I-beams across the street were strongly suggestive of a gas explosion. The intensity of the blast raised immediate concerns among emergency responders that the flames could further spread to adjacent buildings on both the north and south sides of the explosion site.
In response to the situation, firefighters acted quickly to evacuate other residents in the vicinity to ensure their safety. Neighboring Jeff Scott, who witnessed the event, noted the rapid response and evacuation efforts which helped to prevent any injuries from occurring.
