Fugitive Stabbed Constable Meets Fatal End as Telangana Police Act in Self-Defense

HYDERABAD, India — A 24-year-old man suspected of fatally stabbing a police constable in Telangana was shot and killed by officers on Monday after he allegedly attempted to attack them. The incident unfolded at a government hospital in Nizamabad, where the man, identified as Shaik Riyaz, was taken for treatment following the violent confrontation.

Authorities stated that Riyaz seized a firearm from an officer while in the hospital and attempted to fire at law enforcement as he tried to escape. Police Commissioner P Sai Chaitanya reported that officers on duty heard sounds of commotion coming from the ward where Riyaz was being treated. Upon investigating, they encountered him refusing their demands to surrender the weapon.

When Riyaz continued to threaten officers, a policeman subsequently discharged his weapon, striking the suspect. Emergency procedures, including a postmortem examination, were initiated as part of the investigation into the incident and Riyaz’s earlier actions.

Riyaz was previously involved in a separate criminal case related to vehicle theft and had attacked Constable Pramod, an officer in his forties, on the evening of October 17. The deadly encounter occurred while Pramod was transporting Riyaz to the police station on a motorcycle, where he sustained multiple stab wounds and later succumbed to his injuries. A sub-inspector also received injuries during the attack.

In the aftermath of Riyaz’s death, the family of Constable Pramod expressed a sense of relief, feeling justice served for their loss. They welcomed the police’s swift actions and the measures announced to assist them in the wake of this tragedy. The Telangana police chief, DGP B Shivadhar Reddy, underscored the department’s commitment to upholding law and order, highlighting the provision of significant financial support and job opportunities for Pramod’s family.

Meanwhile, Riyaz’s relatives alleged excessive force was used against them during police inquiries into his whereabouts. They claimed that authorities had exerted pressure to gather information that could lead to Riyaz’s apprehension prior to the fatal confrontation.

As the investigation continues, state officials have reiterated their stance against criminal activities, signaling a determination to safeguard public safety and prevent violence against law enforcement personnel.
