Friends mourn teen as detectives shift case to homicide

Kimberly Olmos, 18, was found shot in a stairwell; investigators seek a person who left the scene.

HELL’S KITCHEN, N.Y. — An 18-year-old woman identified by friends as Kimberly Olmos died after being shot in the head early Sunday inside a West 55th Street public housing building, prompting police to open a homicide investigation and search for a person who was with her when a gun went off.

Police said officers responding around 12:45 a.m. found Olmos in a stairwell and she later died. Investigators initially considered whether the wound was self-inflicted; by midweek, detectives said evidence pointed to another person handling a firearm that discharged before fleeing the building.

Outside Olmos’ Bronx home in Mount Hope, a cluster of candles, flowers and handwritten notes grew as classmates and neighbors stopped to grieve. “She knew how to make you laugh,” friend Daya Nellis said, remembering a “sweet, silly” teen who loved DIY crafts and talked about college plans.

Friends voiced frustration and pleaded for accountability. “Turn yourself in,” Jason Rodriguez said, while another friend, Jordan Berrios, called the death “another young soul” lost to violence. The family is planning funeral services as the community organizes rides and meals for relatives.

Detectives have not announced any arrests. They are reviewing surveillance video, tracing movements in and out of the stairwell and seeking the weapon. The city medical examiner will issue the final ruling on manner and cause of death. Police said updates would follow when more evidence is processed.

The investigation continues this week as officers re-interview potential witnesses and canvass nearby blocks for footage that might show who left moments after the shot. Officials urged anyone with information to contact detectives as they work to determine what led to Olmos’ final moments.
