Karim Lamido, Nigeria — Recent clashes in the Karim Lamido local government area have resulted in multiple fatalities, highlighting the ongoing unrest that has plagued the region for years. This flare-up of violence comes shortly after a committee established by Governor Agbu Kefas delivered recommendations aimed at resolving long-standing land disputes.
The incidents erupted last week amid a conflict over farmland ownership between the Shomo and Wurkun communities in Usmanu village. As the violence unfolded, many residents were compelled to evacuate their homes, transforming once-bustling areas into ghost towns.
Abner Shittu, a member of the Taraba State House of Assembly representing the Karim Lamido district, acknowledged the government’s attempts to mediate the situation but emphasized the need for community involvement in fostering peace. “While the governor is making significant efforts, our people must also do their part to help restore tranquility,” he stressed.
Virginia Baba Bambur, the chairperson of the Karim Lamido local government area, called for dialogue among the conflicting parties. She pointed out that constructive conversations and cooperation are essential to achieving lasting peace and progress in the region.
According to the Taraba State Police Command, the situation is gradually improving. Police spokesperson ASP Victor Mshelizah reported that patrols are being conducted to enhance security; however, residents remain concerned as armed groups continue to operate under the cover of darkness.
In response to the deteriorating security, a curfew that was previously imposed on Karim Lamido town and several neighboring villages has been relaxed. Residents hope that this adjustment will lead to a more stable environment, but many express caution about the ongoing threat of violence.
Local leaders are now urging all factions involved to prioritize dialogue over conflict. Efforts to educate community members about the importance of peaceful coexistence and mediation are being ramped up as part of the broader initiative to restore harmony in the area.
As the aftermath of these clashes unfolds, residents are left hoping that collaborative efforts will pave the way for sustainable peace and security in Karim Lamido and beyond.
