Four US College Instructors Stabbed in China Park: Rare Violent Incident Against Foreigners in Security State

Hong Kong – Four American college instructors teaching in China were victims of a violent stabbing incident while visiting a busy public park, marking a rare occurrence of violent crime against foreigners in the heavily secured state. The educators, hailing from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, sustained injuries during a partnership program with Beihua University in Jilin, northeastern China.

Cornell College President Jonathan Brand confirmed the incident, stating that all instructors were being assisted and that no students were involved in the program. Footage circulating on Chinese social media showed the aftermath of the attack, with the victims covered in blood but conscious and speaking on their cell phones.

According to China’s Foreign Ministry, the four foreign teachers were attacked at Beishan Park in Jilin, promptly receiving medical treatment without life-threatening injuries. The authorities are investigating the incident as an isolated case to determine the motive behind the attack.

State representative Adam Zabner disclosed that his brother, one of the victims, was on his second visit to China with Cornell and is currently recovering from the attack. While details remain unclear, the incident has sparked concern in Iowa, with Governor Kim Reynolds denouncing the attack as horrifying.

The stabbing incident comes at a time when China seeks to attract international visitors post-Covid restrictions and enhance educational exchanges with the US. The relationship between the two nations remains tense, but efforts to promote cultural interactions continue, emphasizing the importance of people-to-people exchanges.

China’s commitment to educational cooperation with the US has been highlighted by President Xi Jinping, who aims to foster personal ties between the two countries by inviting young Americans for exchange and study programs. Despite the incident, both nations remain dedicated to strengthening their ties through academic collaborations and cultural exchanges.

Recent events underscore China’s stringent gun control measures contributing to low rates of violent crime but have not eliminated knife attacks in public places. The safety of foreigners in China remains a priority as the country continues to implement measures to protect all individuals within its borders.
