DUNBAR, PA – In a deeply troubling case, authorities discovered the body of a 9-year-old girl in the Youghiogheny River early Thursday, leading to the arrest of her foster mother. Renesmay Eutsey, who had been reported missing the day before, was found partially submerged near Smithton, Westmoreland County.
Kourtney Malinda Eutsey, 31, now faces charges including criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of children. The charges come after a search revealed severe signs of abuse on Renesmay, including malnourishment and injuries, according to Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele.
The child had been living with Kourtney Eutsey for five years alongside her siblings, as their biological mother, Christina Benedetto, sought to improve her circumstances. Benedetto, devastated by the loss, recalled her daughter’s vibrant spirit before entering foster care.
Investigators were initially misled by Kourtney Eutsey, complicating the search efforts. Surveillance footage from the home showed suspicious activity, while interviews with children revealed chilling details of the events leading to Renesmay’s death.
According to court documents, one child overheard plans to dispose of Renesmay’s body in a river. Another child witnessed her being placed in a tote. Kourtney Eutsey later confessed to disposing of the body after claiming the child died from choking.
Eutsey remains in custody without bail, deemed a threat to herself and others. Children & Youth Services have removed the other children from the home as the investigation continues.
Sarah Shipley, who lived in the household, has not been charged, though allegations of her involvement have emerged. Authorities expect additional charges as the investigation progresses.
Benedetto’s anguish highlights the immense emotional toll of this tragedy, underscoring the critical need for vigilance and protection in the foster care system. The case raises serious questions about the responsibilities of those entrusted with the care of vulnerable children.
