Sydney, Australia — Andrew O’Keefe, a former host of the Australian version of “The Chase,” has escaped prison time despite being found guilty of multiple charges, including assault and drug possession. The 53-year-old TV personality was involved in a legal battle following accusations that he assaulted a woman and breached a court order intended to prevent violence.
In January of this year, following a three-day trial, O’Keefe was convicted on charges of common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of illegal drugs, and violating an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO). The disturbing incidents that led to these charges occurred in September 2021 during a dispute where O’Keefe was accused of physically attacking a woman, whose identity has been withheld for legal reasons.
According to court records, the altercation escalated when O’Keefe forcefully pushed the woman against a doorway, which resulted in injuries to her hand and wrist. Subsequently, he kicked her in the thigh, causing her to fall. The presiding magistrate at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court condemned O’Keefe’s actions, highlighting their violent and degrading nature, as well as the fear they instilled not only in the victim but also in her children at their home.
Despite his actions, O’Keefe defended himself in court by claiming that the injuries sustained by the woman were self-inflicted, a claim that the magistrate strongly dismissed.
Beyond the assault charges, law enforcement found O’Keefe in possession of two types of illegal drugs at his residence when he was arrested two days following the assault. In relation to these drug offenses, O’Keefe was fined $800.
Apart from the recent convictions, O’Keefe has experienced other legal troubles. He was reportedly caught driving on a suspended license in Sydney’s Bellevue Hill in June, showing a continued pattern of legal issues.
The court also highlighted that O’Keefe suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar affective disorder, conditions for which he is under medication. In light of his mental health issues and the severity of the crimes, the court decided to sentence O’Keefe to an 18-month community corrections order specifically tailored for domestic violence offenses.
This sentence aims to allow him to receive the necessary support and treatment for his mental health issues while keeping the community safe from potential harm.
