Orlando, FL — A former deputy of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office has been apprehended and charged with murder following allegations that he orchestrated the death of his estranged wife to resemble a suicide. Anthony Shea, 49, is accused of shooting his wife, Lt. Eloilda “Ellie” Shea, 39, and subsequently attempting to manipulate the scene to mislead authorities about the nature of her death.
The incident came to light after deputies were summoned to the Shea residence, where they discovered Lt. Shea deceased with a firearm placed on her chest. Anthony Shea, who had previously retired from the same sheriff’s department amid controversies over personal conduct, initially claimed that he found his wife in that state after returning from an outing with their children.
Investigations later unveiled that on the night of the incident, Anthony Shea allegedly used Ellie’s phone to send text messages aiming to establish an alibi. However, a crucial piece of evidence surfaced from a recording accidentally activated during the message sending, which captured no sound of a gunshot but recorded Shea’s movements in and out of the room prior to him calling 911.
The couple had reportedly been experiencing marital issues stemming from Shea’s acknowledged extramarital affair. The situation had escalated to frequent arguments, with Shea suggesting that his wife had been severely affected emotionally by the revelations.
Anthony Shea had given initial consent for the police to search their home but withdrew permission as the investigation intensified. Later developments revealed that not only had Shea allegedly shot his wife, but he also tried to control the crime scene and misdirect deputies to substantiate his concocted narrative.
Prior to the incident, Shea was under scrutiny for engaging in an intimate relationship while on duty, an investigation that led to his resignation to preempt potential termination from the service. Following his arrest, he was held without bond, pending legal proceedings which are expected to further examine the details of the case.
Lt. Eloilda Shea, who joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2011 and was a mother to two daughters, was remembered by colleagues as a dedicated officer and an emerging leader within the department. Orange County Sheriff John Mina, in a heartfelt statement, praised her commitment to law enforcement and expressed profound grief over her tragic death, emphasizing the department’s resolve in seeking justice for her.
The community and law enforcement colleagues are left grappling with shock and grief as they mourn Lt. Shea and seek to make sense of the tragic events. The case has also sparked discussions on issues of domestic violence and the manipulation of evidence in crime scenes within the law enforcement community.
Sheriff Mina thanked the homicide detectives for their relentless effort in shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Lt. Shea’s death, highlighting the complexity of investigating a crime involving one of their own. As the case unfolds, the local community and the broader law enforcement network remain vigilant, awaiting justice for a revered officer whose life was cut tragically short.
