FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – A former employee of Hertz at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has been arrested for allegedly facilitating the theft of 12 rental cars in an elaborate scheme. Savannah Harsha Phillips, who worked at the airport’s Hertz location, was charged after authorities uncovered what they describe as an “inside job.”
Investigators say Phillips was stationed at the security gate when she allowed three men to drive off with the vehicles. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the men entering the garage, selecting cars, and then proceeding to the security gate where Phillips was on duty. She is seen on camera pressing a button that lifted the barrier, permitting the cars to exit the facility.
The thefts occurred swiftly, with the entire operation lasting just about an hour. Hertz management discovered the vehicles were missing when a routine check revealed no authorized rental contracts for any of the stolen cars. The thefts came to light after calls from Hertz locations in Texas and Virginia reported the cars’ involvement in criminal activities in those states.
Upon being confronted by her employer, Phillips allegedly reacted with hostility before abruptly resigning. Authorities have charged her with 13 counts, including 12 for grand theft. Her bond is set at $62,000.
Hertz estimates the financial impact of the theft at nearly $60,000. The company is now reviewing its security protocols to prevent future incidents.
The arrest report highlights the significance of internal security measures and the potential risks when employees are involved in criminal activities. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to track down the other individuals involved in the scheme.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and oversight within businesses, especially those dealing with high-value assets like rental vehicles. Hertz has not released additional details about any changes to their security procedures following the thefts.
Authorities urge any witnesses or individuals with information related to the incident to come forward as they continue their investigation into the broader network of suspects.
