STERLING, Va. – A home explosion in Sterling, Virginia left one volunteer firefighter dead and 13 others injured, with one firefighter already released from the hospital, according to officials from Loudoun County.
The explosion, caused by a leaking propane tank stored underground at a residential property, destroyed the home and damaged nearby residences, resembling a warzone-like scene, as described by neighbors. Tragically, Trevor Brown, 45, lost his life in the blast.
First responders were initially called to the Silver Ridge Drive property to investigate a potential gas leak when the explosion occurred, trapping some of the responders under debris. Two occupants of the home, along with some pets, were safely evacuated. Four injured firefighters were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Following the incident, the Loudoun fire department, along with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have been conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. As of Sunday, three of the injured firefighters remain hospitalized in stable condition.
Fire department chief Keith Johnson confirmed the evacuation of the home occupants and emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.
The released firefighter is a sign of hope after the tragic event. As the community mourns the loss of Trevor Brown and continues to offer support and prayers for the injured, the investigation into the cause of the explosion will lead to important safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
