Fears Grow for Downtown Safety as Suspect in Viral Beating Attack Walks Free on Bond

CINCINNATI—Authorities have raised alarms about public safety following a disturbing incident involving a violent attack in downtown Cincinnati. Three suspects are now facing criminal charges stemming from an altercation that went viral, prompting demands for city officials to address safety concerns in the area.

Jermaine Matthews, 39, of East Price Hill, was released on bond Thursday, only hours after his second court appearance in two days. He is accused of orchestrating an assault on July 26 at the intersection of Fourth and Elm streets, during which he and others allegedly ambushed their victims. Matthews turned himself in to police earlier this week, facing charges of aggravated riot and assault. At his arraignment on Wednesday, Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Michael Peck established his bond at $100,000.

Following further charges brought against him, including two counts of felonious assault and a misdemeanor assault charge, Matthews returned to court on Thursday. Judge Peck increased his bond to $170,000, totaling $270,000 for all charges. Soon after, records indicate that Matthews posted bond and was released from jail. His case will be presented to a Hamilton County grand jury on August 8.

According to police reports, surveillance footage allegedly shows Matthews delivering multiple punches and stomping on a victim while attempting to inflict serious harm. He is also accused of dragging an unconscious individual into the street and continuing the assault.

Two other suspects have also been charged in connection with the incident: Montianez Merriweather, 34, faces a $500,000 bond, and DeKyra Vernon, 24, was assigned a bond of $200,000. Both are charged with felonious assault, assault, and aggravated rioting. During their initial court appearances, defense attorneys for Merriweather and Matthews argued that their clients acted in self-defense, claiming they were initially attacked by the individuals they are accused of assaulting.

Despite the arrests, two suspects remain at large, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. The FBI has become involved to assess whether civil rights violations occurred during the altercation.

As residents express mounting concern over public safety, city leaders are being urged to take proactive measures in response to this troubling event. Community members who may have information related to the attack are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.
