TROUP COUNTY, Ga. – Two individuals lost their lives and three others suffered injuries in a tragic incident that authorities are attributing to drag racing in Troup County on Sunday night.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the fatal car accident occurred as a result of drag racing. Troup County Coroner Erin Hackley has identified the victims as two men from LaGrange.
Reports indicate that one of the deceased individuals was allegedly participating as a driver in the drag race at the intersection of Antioch and Chewning Roads, while the other victim was believed to be a spectator.
In a statement, Coroner Hackley revealed that 42-year-old Cory Maddox was fatally injured while observing a reported drag race involving two vehicles in LaGrange. The second victim has been identified as 47-year-old Matalito Bass.
The collision reportedly involved an S-10 Chevrolet that crashed into a Chevrolet Trailblazer, which was believed to be a vehicle carrying spectators.
Hackley stated, “It is believed that Cory Maddox was a bystander standing near a parked vehicle on the side of the road. Matalito Bass is believed to have been the driver of the S-10 truck.”
As of now, there are no updates on the conditions of the adult female and two children who sustained injuries during the incident. Emergency responders airlifted them to trauma centers for treatment on Sunday night. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether they were spectators or occupants of the vehicles involved in the drag race.
