MERTON, CA – A catastrophic collision on State Route 198 claimed the lives of three individuals Thursday afternoon, involving two motorcycles and an SUV. The accident occurred around 1:40 p.m., just east of Merton Drive, bringing traffic to a standstill.
The California Highway Patrol received numerous calls reporting the incident, prompting an immediate response. The road was closed in both directions for over an hour as emergency services attended to the scene.
Authorities confirmed that all three drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been disclosed as notifications to their families are pending.
The cause of the crash remains under scrutiny, with investigators yet to determine the factors contributing to the incident. While speed is being considered, there is no current evidence of alcohol or drug involvement.
