Orillia, Canada — A peaceful July evening turned horrific for Ryan Lawes and his family when a confrontation outside the Knights Inn near West Street South escalated into a violent attack that nearly claimed his life. Lawes, 43, had relocated from Oshawa to Orillia with his wife, Holly Cahill, and their three sons, eagerly anticipating the arrival of their daughter when they faced an unexpected threat.
The incident began when Cahill noticed a young man yelling for help as he walked by the hotel. Concerned for the safety of those involved, she rushed outside, unaware of the danger that lay ahead. Instead of finding someone in distress, she encountered aggression and threats. “He yelled that he was going to slit my throat,” Cahill recounted, later describing how the man threatened to harm her unborn child. At 36 weeks pregnant, her fears heightened as the situation darkened.
Lawes intervened when he heard the threats against his family. “I couldn’t stand by and let him threaten my wife and child,” he said. What followed was a brutal altercation where Lawes was stabbed multiple times, leaving him fighting for survival outside the hotel.
Despite quick medical attention, Lawes suffered severe injuries, including a punctured lung and damage to vital organs. He was rushed to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. Cahill described the grueling experience of juggling her own health concerns with worry for her husband’s life. “I was terrified,” she said. “Ryan wasn’t initially expected to make it to the birth of our daughter.”
After hours of emergency surgery, doctors were able to stabilize Lawes. He faced a complicated recovery that involved repairing his small intestine and fighting off a life-threatening infection. “They told me it could kill me within hours if they didn’t catch it,” he recalled, reflecting on the severity of his condition.
The emotional and physical toll has been devastating. Lawes has had to come to terms with his new reality, including chronic pain and significant adjustments to his lifestyle. He lost his drywall business and struggles with daily tasks amid ongoing medical treatments. “I’m on nine different medications just to make it through the day,” he mentioned, illustrating the harsh impact of the attack on his life.
The psychological effects have lingered as well. Lawes experiences panic attacks and newfound anxiety about his surroundings. “I never struggled with anxiety before,” he stated, adding that he finds himself fearful of strangers. His wife has also felt the strain of the situation, especially as they navigated the birth of their daughter. Miraculously, Lawes was able to attend the birth, a silver lining amidst the turmoil.
The family has received some assistance from local victim services, but the challenge of rebuilding their lives remains daunting. “I just want to hold my baby and adapt to whatever our new normal is,” Lawes expressed, highlighting the deep emotional scars left behind.
Law enforcement has confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman in connection with the attack. The accused faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and threats of violence. Police have described the incident as isolated, but the Lawes family feels its consequences will resonate long after the legal proceedings conclude.
As they grapple with the aftermath of that fateful night, Lawes and Cahill remain focused on their family, hopeful for a future that can offer some semblance of peace and healing.
