Amethi, India – A chilling incident unfolded in Amethi’s Bhavani Nagar where a teacher, his wife, and their two young daughters, aged one and six, were tragically murdered at their home last Thursday. Authorities have identified the suspect, who had communicated a cryptic yet public declaration of his deadly intentions just days before the crime was executed.
The teacher, identified as Sunil Kumar, and his wife Poonam Bharti, were targeted by one Chandan Verma, a man whom Bharti had accused of threatening her life previously. Less than two months prior to the deadly incident, Bharti had lodged a police complaint against Verma. According to the filed report, she experienced violence and threats from Verma, notably during a distressing episode at a Rae Bareli hospital.
“He said ‘If you report this I will kill you’. He has threatened to kill me before this as well. My family is in danger. If any incident or accident happens with me or my husband in the future, Chandan Verma will be responsible,” Bharti stated in her complaint. She urged law enforcement to take immediate action to protect her and her family.
In the investigation following the murders, police detained Verma and disclosed that they had found a disturbing message in a screenshot from his WhatsApp status, dated September 12, stating, “5 people are going to die, I will show you soon.” This revelation has suggested that the suspect had planned not only the murder but also his own suicide after the act.
The timing of events reveals that Verma possibly sought some form of absolution or solace, as he was seen visiting a renowned temple in Amethi shortly before carrying out the murders.
The grievous nature of this case has projected the Uttar Pradesh administration, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, into severe scrutiny by opposition parties. The state has come under criticism for what appears to be a deteriorating security environment, questioning the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies. The Chief Minister condemned the killings as “unforgivable” and affirmed that stringent legal action would be pursued against those responsible.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed his dismay at the state’s capability to protect its citizens, implicitly questioning the presence of governmental safeguards. “Is anyone there, is someone there anywhere,” Yad tweeted, sharing a news report on the occurrence.
Further amplifying the political ramifications, Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma, affiliated with the Congress party, highlighted that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had personally reached out to the family of the victims.
