The passengers were hospitalized in stable condition after a family argument became a pursuit involving a reportedly stolen pickup.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — An infant and two other passengers were ejected from a sedan and hospitalized after an argument between the child’s parents escalated into a vehicle chase and two crashes in northwest Harris County, authorities said.
Investigators said the chain of events began shortly after 2 a.m. July 25 when an estranged couple stopped at a gas station on Veterans Memorial Drive near Spears Road. The couple had been arguing inside a vehicle occupied by three other people, including their infant, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The two adults got out and continued arguing at the station, authorities said. The woman later returned to the vehicle and drove away with the passengers, leaving the man behind. Investigators allege the man then took someone else’s red pickup truck and chased the sedan.
The pursuit ended near the 12000 block of Veterans Memorial Drive. The silver sedan left the roadway and crashed into a ditch, ejecting all three passengers, officials said. Emergency crews took the infant and the two other passengers to a hospital.
The sheriff’s office said the three patients were in stable condition and expected to recover. Authorities did not release their ages, other than identifying one passenger as an infant, and did not provide details about their injuries. The woman who was driving was not reported among those ejected.
The pickup also crashed nearby and struck a gazebo, according to investigators. One person in or near the truck was injured but could walk after the wreck. Officials did not release the person’s identity or clarify whether the alleged driver had any passengers during the chase.
Deputies said people riding in the sedan had contacted family members while the pursuit was underway. Those relatives began traveling to the area as the vehicles continued along Veterans Memorial Drive, adding another group of people to an already unstable scene.
The crashes did not end the confrontation. Investigators said the estranged couple continued arguing as relatives arrived near Duran Canyon Lane. An adult male relative then confronted the man accused of taking the pickup and starting the chase.
Authorities allege the man shot the relative and fled. Deputies found the wounded man in the 11900 block of Duran Canyon Lane and pronounced him dead at the scene. The victim’s identity had not been released as of Monday.
The sheriff’s office described the case as a complex investigation involving a family disturbance, a reported vehicle theft, a moving pursuit, two crashes and a fatal shooting. Detectives have not released findings about the speed of the vehicles, the use of child restraints or the precise cause of either crash.
Authorities said the suspected shooter had been identified but remained out of custody in the latest public updates. Homicide detectives and crash investigators are continuing to examine the events, and no list of charges has been announced.
