Atlanta, Georgia — The family of a young woman is demanding answers after she remains on life support following a violent incident at the Fulton County Jail. Tyriana Ledbetter, 20, was attacked in her cell on September 23 and is currently receiving treatment at Grady Hospital.
Ledbetter has been detained since late May on charges including armed robbery and aggravated assault. According to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, her attacker was identified as Shania White, another inmate. Corrections officers discovered Ledbetter unconscious beneath her cell bed and rushed her to the hospital due to the severity of her injuries.
In the wake of the attack, the Sheriff’s Office has charged White with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and tampering with evidence. As the investigation proceeds, Ledbetter’s family is voicing grave concerns regarding her treatment and safety while in custody.
Gloria Buckner, Ledbetter’s mother, spoke outside the Fulton County Courthouse, criticizing the conditions in which her daughter was confined. “It’s just unfit and crowded. You cannot just place a 27-year-old with a 20-year-old reading at a sixth-grade level, and then expect there won’t be violence,” Buckner stated.
Ledbetter’s sister, Tyshun Barney, added that the family feels neglected by Sheriff Patrick Labat and his administration, noting that they were not informed of Ledbetter’s condition until a week after the incident. A spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office later claimed the family could not be reached initially because Ledbetter had not provided an emergency contact at the time of her arrest. A chaplain eventually contacted Buckner two days later, but the family was not able to visit Ledbetter until a week had passed.
Concerns about safety in the jail have been echoed in a report from the U.S. Department of Justice, which detailed alarming rates of violence within the facility. The report, released last November, noted that the jail has been plagued by homicides, stabbings, and other violent incidents. It highlighted the lack of protections for inmates, a pressing civil rights violation.
“Leadership at the County and Sheriff’s Office have publicly decried the violence yet have not implemented sufficient measures to address the ongoing crisis,” the report stated. Earlier this year, a consent decree was placed between the county and the Department of Justice to avert legal action, with a court monitor appointed to ensure corrective actions were being taken.
In August, the monitor cited four priorities for improvement, focusing on inmate classification, housing, staffing, and supervision, all essential to reducing the risks faced by inmates.
In a recent interview, Sheriff Labat shifted responsibility to county commissioners, asserting that he was limited by available resources. Following the incident, Labat met with Ledbetter’s family at Grady Hospital. Barney claimed that his apology felt disingenuous and lacked the sincerity they expected.
In a bid to assist with escalating medical costs, Ledbetter’s family has set up a GoFundMe page. Organizer Tijuana Buckner expressed concern, stating that the crisis at Fulton County Jail had reached a tragic point, with Ledbetter’s case serving as a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those in custody. The family hopes to shine a light on the pressing need for reform in the facility, where overcrowding and a lack of adequate safety measures continue to be critical issues.
