Families Torn as Convicted Murderer Seeks New Trial Six Years After Thanksgiving Tragedy

ALBANY, Ga. — A family’s struggle for closure intensified this week as the boyfriend of a young woman fatally shot on Thanksgiving Day in 2019 sought a new trial. Marcus Carter, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 22-year-old Nykeah Gilbert, is contesting his conviction in a virtual hearing set for January.

Calvin Gilbert, Nykeah’s father, expressed deep frustration with Carter’s attempt to overturn the verdict. “Justice was served, but it’s been a long road,” he said. “It feels like he’s refusing to face the consequences of his actions. There’s a saying: if you commit the crime, you must do the time.” Carter was convicted on multiple charges, including malice murder and aggravated assault, after a trial that concluded in May 2025. Four months later, he received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Nykeah’s mother, Patricia Gilbert, echoed her husband’s sentiments, stating that while the outcome was painful, it provided some solace. “It wasn’t perfect, but it was the best we could get at that moment,” she said. “All we ever wanted was an apology, something to show that he understands the gravity of what he did.”

The Gilbert family is now grappling with the emotional toll of Carter’s renewed legal efforts. They fear reliving the trauma of the initial trial and would prefer to move forward, cherishing memories of their daughter instead. “I pray to find peace one day,” Calvin Gilbert shared. “Not just for my daughter but to release the anger I hold toward him.”

Carter’s forthcoming hearing had initially been scheduled for October 10 but was postponed. The Gilbert family is seeking confirmation from the court regarding the new date, aware that delays can prolong their suffering.

As they navigate this difficult period, the Gilberts reflect on the lasting impact of their daughter’s loss and the enduring quest for healing. They hope to find a way to honor Nykeah’s memory without the shadow of another trial looming over them.
