Explosive Start to the Week: Long Beach ADU Destroyed, One Injured and Residents Displaced

An explosion early Monday morning in a Long Beach, California accessory dwelling unit resulted in significant damage and injuries, while also temporarily displacing residents, officials reported. The incident, which took place around 11 a.m. on the 2800 block of Gale Avenue, prompted an immediate response from the Long Beach Fire Department.

Upon arrival, fire crews confirmed the explosion and encountered multiple small fires, which were quickly extinguished. The blast originated in an auxiliary structure located at the rear of a residential property, severely damaging the unit and leading to its designation as uninhabitable.

One individual suffered injuries during the explosion and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment. Details concerning the severity of those injuries remain unclear. The primary residence on the property also incurred minor structural damage and was marked for restricted use, permitting entry only during daylight hours.

Following the explosion, the Red Cross was called upon to assist two adults and one minor who were displaced from the main house. A neighboring property also reported minor damage. Thankfully, no further injuries have been reported.

Authorities, meanwhile, have launched an investigation into the causes of the explosion but have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community or adjacent homes. All utilities in the area have been secured to prevent any additional incidents.

The cleanup operations are actively underway, spearheaded by the City of Long Beach’s “Clean Team”, aiming to restore the affected area as swiftly as possible.

Local fire investigators are soliciting information from neighbors or other witnesses who might have insights into the event. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation and ensure community safety. The investigation serves not only to ascertain the cause of this incident but also to prevent future occurrences in the community.

As the community begins to recover from the shock of the day’s events, the effectiveness of emergency services in handling and quickly containing the situation has been highlighted, along with the resilience of the residents affected by the blast.
