LEBANON, Ore. — A fiery scene unfolded Saturday morning when firefighters responded to a call about multiple vehicles engulfed in flames on W Grant Street. The alarm sounded at 9:20 a.m., prompting an Albany Fire Department medic unit to assist, as they were already in the area handling other emergency calls.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered two vehicles fully engulfed, dangerously close to a nearby building. Fire crews quickly initiated efforts to contain the fire, but the situation escalated dramatically when an explosion erupted from one of the cars, shaking the neighborhood and scattering debris across yards and streets.
Despite the intense flames and explosion, firefighters effectively prevented the fire from spreading to the adjacent home. A secondary crew arrived to ensure the area was safe, evacuating residents and clearing the building of potential threats. During the firefighting operation, authorities discovered the remains of a local resident who had been living in one of the cars.
Firefighters successfully brought the flames under control within 20 minutes, extinguishing all three vehicles involved in the incident. The incident commander then contacted local police to notify them about the victim, resulting in the temporary closure of the street for a thorough investigation.
Authorities from the Lebanon Fire Investigation Team are currently examining the cause of the blaze, which remains undetermined. In the chaos, two firefighters sustained minor injuries from the explosion and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Meanwhile, residents of the nearby building have been temporarily displaced until power can be reinstated.
The Lebanon Fire District deployed 17 personnel to the scene, including a ladder truck, several engine and medic units, and additional support from both Albany and Lebanon units. A heavy rescue team, two chief officers, and a Deputy Fire Marshal also participated in the response, demonstrating the collaborative effort between various agencies.
Additionally, Lebanon Police and Pacific Power rendered support, while Albany Fire Department provided an engine to cover the district during the incident. The quick and coordinated response underscores the community’s commitment to safety and emergency preparedness, even amidst tragic circumstances.
